Many Workers Will Face Retirement Shortfall: GAO

For all of the talk about the importance of saving for retirement through a 401(k) and other savings plans, 37% of those born in 1990 and just now entering the workforce will have no savings by the time they leave the workforce, according to a report from the Government Accountability Office. As a group, those retiring in the 2050s will have only saved enough money to replace 22% of their pre-retirement income. Those who earn low salaries are particularly in danger of not being prepared for retirement, not just because they lack the funds to set aside but because the preferential tax treatment for contributions is not likely to persuade them to save.

NEW YORK-Distribution executives must integrate all available data, including information from outside sources, to take advantage of new marketing opportunities, according to speakers at a National Investment Company Service Association seminar here earlier this month entitled "How to Stretch Your Distribution Dollars." "There's so much good intelligence that we can use to make the wholesaler's job easier," said Mary Ann Doggett, co-founder and managing partner of Interactive Communications. But she noted that there is a difference between getting that information and using it.

With new devices making it easier than ever for brokerages to communicate with customers via e-mail, instant messages or text messages, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has issued detailed guidance on the review and supervision of electronic communications that mutual fund executives might want to take notice of, as well. Basically, all communications must be documented and recorded, firms must give their brokers and reps principle-based guidance on what is permitted in electronic communications, and they must supervise these communications and be able to monitor them.

In the midst of an already crowded marketplace of exchange-traded fund (ETF) providers, two new players are making a run for the end zone hoping to score with investors. The Securities and Exchange Commission has just given the green light to four innovative, narrowly focused ETFs from FocusShares of Montvale, N.J. Through a licensing agreement, all four ETFs, which were originally registered under the 'MyShares' moniker, will track to equity indexes created by the International Securities Exchange (ISE), which created the first fully automated options exchange in May 2000. The firm has been trading options on a slew of niche and novel indexes.

Troopergate Puts Spitz on the Skids

It wasn't long ago that Eliot Spitzer, reveling in the glory of a national media frenzy for having shaken down Wall Street scams with a power not even the entire Securities and Exchange Commission could muster, hinted he might one day run for president of the United States. That hardly seems plausible now, due to the Troopergate investigation over whether the New York governor's top aides dug up dirt on his Republican rival, Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno; Spitzer's own refusal to testify as to whether his henchmen were following his orders; and the distinctly growing possibility his aides perjured themselves to cover up for him.

Mutual funds may see a sharp drop in popularity in the coming years as investors start to explore newer products like separately managed accounts and exchange-traded funds. Open-end mutual funds currently comprise the largest share of investment products, a 35% share of the market, according to the 'Advisor Product Forecast' study by Cogent Research. But by 2009, that share could drop by 10% to 31% as advisers move their clients' assets to different products.
